We first envisioned this assessment when LIXIL began to anticipate what it would mean for our employees to come back to the office for the first time in nearly two years. We had to consider, even more so than in the past, the safety and well-being of those returning. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to challenge people across the globe to consider hygiene and health more carefully. In telling our employees that we deemed it safe to resume working in the office, we had to ensure that we were taking the extra step to protect them and their family members. What measures could we put in place to keep employees safer should they choose to return to the office? How could we prioritize health and wellness?
Fortunately, as a company with decades of experience in water technology, LIXIL already had the tools we needed to create a more hygienic workspace. With touchless faucets, toilet flushers, soap dispensers and paper towel dispensers, we have been able to minimize the spread of germs and illness. Utilizing our own products in the bathrooms, common areas and kitchens has proven effective and has put our colleagues at ease. As CDC guidelines evolve, we carefully follow current recommendations for vaccinations, social distancing, and masking – and we always go above and beyond what is recommended. Our top priority remains the safety, health, and wellbeing of one another.
In putting employees’ needs and opinions first, we surveyed over 1000 US-based workers to better understand the changing attitudes on health and hygiene in the workplace. We felt it was paramount to hear what changes we could implement for people to feel comfortable returning to the office. We then decided this was not just a vital assessment for our own employees, but that employees working at other companies could benefit from it as well.

As the pandemic has presented so many individuals with physical and mental health challenges, it is important for employees to understand that their wellbeing is at the forefront of everything we do – and that change is possible. The results of the poll were telling: it is clear that employees, especially those 40 years of age and younger, expect more from the workplace now. Our colleagues want health and wellness to be a top priority when returning to the office – and so should you.
