    Sustainability Statement

    Sustainability & Manufacturing

Vitro was the first U.S. glass manufacturer to have its entire collection of architectural glass products recognized by the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Products Program and the first North American manufacturer to publish third-party verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for flat glass and processed glass products.

Starphire Ultra-Clear® glass is manufactured on both coasts of the United States at Vitro’s glass plants in Carlisle, Pa. and Fresno, Ca.

Starphire® glass made at Fresno is believed to be the only low-iron glass in the world manufactured in an oxygen-fueled glass furnace.  The Fresno glass plant’s furnace was built as Vitro’s first oxy-fire float tank in 2000, it was the lowest NOx-emitting plant in the United States. Later that year, after completion of an ammonia injection effort it became one of the lowest NOx-emitting float glass plant in the nation. The furnace uses a proprietary oxygen-fuel technology developed by Vitro for improved energy and environmental performance as glass is processed from sheet glass to float glass to oxy-fuel float glass.

Vitro’s proprietary process combusts glass raw materials such as sand and silica using oxygen as the primary fuel, reducing natural gas consumption by 15 percent, carbon emissions by 10 percent and nitrogen-oxide emissions by more than 50 percent compared to traditional gas/air-fired glass furnaces.
